A Week With Legends of Slots
I'll be honest, Legends of Slots was never going to be the game I spent my weekend obsessing over. It's a light, tactile tapping game, the kind of thing you open while waiting for a bus. But I put a full week into it to see how it holds up over time rather than in a quick first impression, and there's more craft here than the simple premise suggests.
The loop is spinning a set of reels and chasing little symbol combinations that unlock themed sets. What won me over wasn't the mechanic itself, which is about as simple as it gets, but the presentation around it. Each unlockable theme has its own art direction and sound palette, and switching between them keeps the whole thing from feeling monotonous for longer than you'd think.
My advice if you try it: don't marathon it. Legends of Slots is at its best in short bursts, a few minutes here and there. Spin through a theme, enjoy the animation, put it down. Played that way it's a pleasant little companion app. Played for an hour straight, the repetition starts to show.
By the end of the week I still had it on my home screen, which is more than I can say for a lot of games that pass through here. It knows exactly what it is, and it does that one thing with surprising polish.
